Tips & Tricks for Vegan Waffles
Flax Seed Eggs
Make sure to let your flax seed and water mixture sit for 10 minutes after combining. You need to allow the mixture to sit this long so it has time to thicken. This flax egg will be the binding ingredient in your waffles, so you want to make sure it’s right!
Mixing the Batter
When mixing up the batter, it’s okay if there are a few lumps in it. For the most part, you want to work out most of the lumps. But you also don’t want to overmix the batter or else your waffles will be too dense!
Variations to Vegan Waffles
Add in some cocoa powder to make a chocolate flavored waffles! This is a delicious way to enhance the flavor.
Mix in fresh or frozen fruit to create berry waffles. Any fruit—not just berries—works great for this breakfast waffle recipe.
Add some apple pie spice, cinnamon, or even pumpkin spice to your waffles for another layer of flavor! I recommend ½–1 teaspoon of spice depending on which kind you choose.
Grab your favorite vegan chocolate chips or chunks, and mix them in. Aim for around ½ cup of chocolate pieces for one batch of waffle batter.

Can I double this waffle recipe?
You can easily double this waffle recipe. Just mix up double the amount of ingredients and cook your waffles as normal. You can store the cooked waffles in the oven at 225°F on a baking sheet to keep them warm.
Can I use a different type of plant based milk?
Any plant based milk will work for this recipe. Just swap out the almond milk for cashew, oat, or whatever type of plant milk you prefer.
Can you freeze vegan waffles?
Do you like meal prepping? Go right ahead and flash freeze these waffles on a baking sheet for 1–2 hours. Then transfer the frozen waffles to a freezer-safe bag or container. You can store these waffles in your freezer up to 3–4 months. Then, just reheat them whatever way you would like.
Servings: 6 waffles
- 2 flax eggs 2 tbsp ground flax seeds + 6 tbsp water
- 2 cups flour
- 3 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1 tsp cinnamon optional
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 ¼ cups plain almond milk
- ⅓ cup canola oil
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Preheat waffle iron to medium temperature, and spray with nonstick cooking spray.
In a small bowl, make the flax eggs by stirring together the ground flax and water; allow to sit at least 10 minutes.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
In a separate smaller bowl, stir together flax eggs, almond milk, canola oil, and vanilla extract.
Pour the almond milk mixture into the flour mixture.
Stir until just combined (some lumps are okay).
Spoon batter onto waffle iron and close the lid. The exact amount of batter to use will vary based on the type of waffle maker you have; follow the manufacturer’s directions.
Once waffles are fully cooked, remove them from the iron and serve immediately with maple syrup and fresh fruit.
