Today, fast-food chain Burger King added plant-based chicken nuggets to its menu at its locations across Germany. The new nuggets are made by Holland-based brand The Vegetarian Butcher—which was acquired by multinational conglomerate Unilever in 2018—and can be ordered with vegan dipping sauces such as ketchup, barbecue sauce, or sweet & sour sauce. “In order to be able to offer guests and fans a very special taste experience, Burger King worked intensively on product development and acquired a strong partner in The Vegetarian Butcher,” Klaus Schmäing, Director of Marketing for Burger King Germany, said. “Burger King is the first to offer its guests the chance to try meat-free chicken. Of course, nobody has to [forego] the taste experience of the original: ‘Without meat’ in this case means ‘with maximum taste.’”
The Vegetarian Butcher CEO Hugo Verkuil describes the new soy-based nuggets as “soft and meat-like,” adding that the nuggets are a “delicious vegetable-based alternative for all meat lovers who want to reduce their meat consumption.” Burger King Germany also offers a plant-based Rebel Whopper made with a patty created by The Vegetarian Butcher.
Stateside, Burger King launched the Impossible Whopper at more than 7,200 locations nationwide last year. While Burger King does not offer vegan chicken nuggets in the United States, competing fast-food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) is currently testing plant-based Beyond Fried Chicken in various regions.
