A Guide to Vegan, Cruelty-Free Celebrity Beauty and Skin Care Brands

Every day it can seem like another celebrity comes out with a beauty and skin care brand. But with so many vegan and cruelty-free products being introduced by your favorite pop stars, actors, and influencers, we say, keep ‘em coming!

While all of these brands are cruelty-free, not all are vegan. However, most brands are transparent about the animal-derived ingredients they use and which products they are in. With a little research, you can make sure your purchases are in line with your values.

Selena Gomez has come a long way from her start on Barney & Friends. Now a pop singer with some killer bops and an actress in edgier films like Spring Breakers, she’s added makeup impresario to her resume. Gomez’s Rare Beauty launched on RareBeauty.com and Sephora on September 3. “[W]e’re proud to share that our products will be 100% vegan and cruelty-free,” she shared on an Instagram. “Like you, we love and care for our animals too.”

Rihanna burst onto the pop charts in 2003 and has been full speed ahead ever since as a performer, philanthropist, and fashion icon. She launched Fenty Beauty in 2017 and Fenty Skin in the summer of 2020. Both Fenty Beauty and Fenty Skin are cruelty-free brands and they don’t let suppliers conduct animal testing on their behalf, either. (Rihanna allegedly responded to a fan’s DM asking about whether the line tested on animals with, “you callin’ me an animal?”) Fenty Skin is a fully vegan line, but Fenty Beauty is not. They explain on their website that some products contain beeswax or carmine.

I like being an example of activism in different ways.” She’s also branched out into vegan fragrances, vegan candles, and vegan shoes.

After a career starring in too many iconic films to name, Drew Barrymore took a detour and launched Flower Beauty, a makeup and skin care brand that is cruelty-free. “We’ve been cruelty-free since day one,” the brand says on its website. “We test our products on people, not our furry friends.” The line isn’t entirely vegan (they use carmine and beeswax in some products), although the actress does follow a vegan diet herself when she is filming. Flower Beauty can be found at Walmart and Ulta, and Superdrug in the UK.

Honesty Beauty is cruelty-free but not all products are vegan. “Ever since I’ve been in the makeup chair, I’ve wanted to create beauty products that delivered high-impact results and created lasting looks made with safe ingredients and without synthetic fragrances, because women deserve to have uncompromising products that work,” the actress said.

Available on both its own website and Amazon, the line fulfills Gaga’s promise that beauty is about creativity and self-discovery.
