Dr. Greger: ‘There Is No Convincing Data That Vitamin C Will Help Coronavirus’

Dr. Greger discussed the coronavirus with Plant Based News

There is no convincing data to show that vitamin C could help end the coronavirus pandemic, according to leading plant-based doctor Dr. Michael Greger.

Dr. Michael Greger is an internationally recognized speaker on nutrition, food safety, and public health issues, Dr. Greger is the author of Bird Flu: A Virus Of Our Own Hatching, which looks at infectious diseases and human’s role in them – as well as how we can protect ourselves.

In a now-famous speech more than 10 years ago, Dr. Greger warned of the likelihood of a pandemic such as the one we are now experiencing, calling emerging infectious diseases one of the ‘two greatest threats facing humanity’, alongside climate change.

Vitamin C and coronavirus

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, a number of memes, suggesting that vitamin C can cure the disease have spread widely, leading to organizations like Snopes to debunk the claims.

According to the New York Post, Long Island-based pulmonologist and critical-care specialist Dr. Andrew Weber has been giving intensive-care patients 1,500 milligrams of intravenous vitamin C (the current RDA of Vitamin C in the UK is 40mg per day).

Dr. Webber told the Post: “The patients who received vitamin C did significantly better than those who did not get vitamin C. It helps a tremendous amount, but it is not highlighted because it’s not a sexy drug.”

Trials are currently being undertaken at Wuhan University, with patients being given large doses of vitamin C, but the research will not be completed until September 2020.

‘No convincing data’

“There is no convincing data that taking mega doses of vitamin C will help with this pandemic,” Dr. Greger told Plant Based News.

He added: “Vitamin C is critical to a functioning immune system, but only those who are deficient in Vitamin C should get a boost in their immune system from taking vitamin C and the same thing with zinc.

Health experts recommend following official advice around hand-washing and social distancing as the best way to avoid spreading the virus.

Online conference

Dr. Greger will be speaking at a free online health conference later this month.

The Annual Food Revolution Summit, which runs from April 25 – May 3, brings together a host of top health experts who will discuss diet and health issues.

According to the founders, attendees will ‘get the most up-to-date research and information about food, nutrition, disease prevention, immune health, and environmental stewardship’.
