Plant-based health expert Dr. Michael Greger has revealed what he believes could be the ‘silver lining’ of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Greger is an internationally recognized speaker on nutrition, food safety, and public health issues, he is the author of Bird Flu: A Virus Of Our Own Hatching, which looks at infectious diseases and human’s role in them – as well as how we can protect ourselves.
In this exclusive Plant Based News interview, Dr. Greger spoke about how the pandemic – which is having a devastating impact on human lives and the economy – may actually have a silver lining.
Speaking to PBN‘s Klaus Mitchell, Dr. Greger said: “If there’s ever a silver lining to COVID-19, it’s that I think it will get people to think about some of these broader issues. It’s kind of ironic that one of the risk factors for a severe course of COVID-19 is air pollution.
“Air pollution, as well as a history of smoking, obviously puts you at risk for respiratory pathogens. But ironically, the air quality improved so much in China that the number of people dying prematurely actually went down.
“So we’re talking as many as 1,000 lives saved every single day due to the drop in air pollution. So actually COVID-19 is actually saving lives.”
‘A common goal’
Dr. Greger believes that the pandemic could be ‘the kick in the pants we need’ to get people working together to protect the planet and its inhabitants.
“Seeing all of a sudden the skies clear in India, you know, maybe give people a glimpse to the future, and maybe rally everyone together, across boundaries, across countries, and say, look, we as a human species have a common goal to protect ourselves, to protect this planet, and hopefully will get us starting to think more longterm,” he said.
“Trillions of dollars gone, billions in lockdown, millions potentially could die, if there was anything to wake humanity up, to look at what kind of life we are giving to our children and grandchildren, hopefully this is the kick in the pants we need.”
