Iconic publication British Vogue has branded a plant-based diet as one of the ‘biggest wellness trends’ for 2020.
The listicle cites documentaries such as The Game Changers, Carnage, and Cowspiracy for ‘bringing to light the benefits of plant-based diets’.
‘Alternatives are booming’
“And meat alternatives are booming,” the article, written by Emma Strenner, reads. “According to The Vegan Society, only 40 percent of the global population will be consuming [slaughtered] meat by 2040.”
“Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat provide plant-based protein substitutes that ‘look and cook’ like beef and chicken, and vegan brands such as Field Roast are leaning less on soy-based products and instead using pea, lentil, chickpea, and wheat proteins.”
The magazine also distinguishes the difference between being plant-based and vegan, adding that veganism is ‘seen as an animal-product-free lifestyle that avoids the likes of leather, wool, and honey’.
‘Good for the planet’
Vogue also says ‘the plant-based diet is good for the planet, too’, citing a study from Oxford University, which suggests the single biggest way to reduce your environmental impact is to adopt a plant-based diet – adding that ‘around 15 percent of greenhouse gas emissions are from keeping livestock’.
Other wellness trends mentioned include protecting your eyes from your phone’s blue light, ‘smart’ air purifiers, and face workouts.
