Full steps on how to make vegan mozzarella sticks are in the printable recipe card. This is a quick walk through on how it is made.

  1. Preheat the oil in a heavy duty pan. Make sure it reads 350 degrees.
  2. Then you will cut up the vegan cheese into rectangle pieces.
  3. Whisk your flour, milk, and salt together in a bowl.
  4. Dip in the flour mixture, and then roll in breadcrumbs.
  5. Pan fry making sure all the outside is golden brown.
  6. Serve with marinara dipping sauce if you would like.

Helpful Tips for Making Vegan Mozzarella Sticks

Cutting Cheese

I like to cut into long rectangles to act the same as a traditional mozzarella stick you would order at a restaurant. Depending on how big or small the cook time varies.

Pan for Frying

Having a heavy duty pan allows the oil to heat evenly. If your pan is light it can create hot and cool spots and potentially cause you to have uneven cooking.

Vegan Mozzarella Sticks Variations

Cheese

I used a cashew based mozzarella vegan cheese. You are more than welcome to swap it out with any vegan cheese you prefer.

Breadcrumbs

I used Italian flavored bread crumbs but you can swap with plain breadcrumbs. Then add in seasoning that you would like to flavor your mozzarella sticks.

Oven Baked

Instead of pan frying you can place these sticks on a baking sheet in a single layer. Spray with cooking oil, and bake at 425 for 10 minutes or so. I flip half way through, and then spritz the other side with cooking spray. The cooking spray allows the sticks to become crispy.

Vegan Mozzarella Sticks FAQs

What is vegan mozzarella cheese made of?

Vegan cheese is generally made out of nuts. They are made with vegetable proteins instead of dairy based.

Is vegan cheese healthier than dairy cheese?

Vegan cheese is a healthier alternative to dairy cheese. There is no dairy proteins, fats, etc. You will find that dairy free is recommended.

Can you freeze vegan mozzarella sticks?

After you batter the sticks you will place on a lined baking sheet. Then freeze for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Once they are frozen then you will place them in a freezer container and freeze for 1-2 months. Then when you go to cook the mozzarella sticks you will cook straight from frozen.

How to store leftover mozzarella sticks?

If you do not eat all your mozzarella sticks you will just place them in the fridge in a sealed container or freezer bag. Store in the fridge for 3-4 days. You can eat cold or warm them up. You will find that the crunch of the outside is softer.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz. vegan mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup unsweetened almond milk
  • ⅔ cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup italian style breadcrumbs
  • Canola oil for frying
  • Marinara for serving optional

Instructions

  • Preheat oil in a large heavy bottomed pan to 350 F

  • While the oil is heating, cut the vegan mozzarella into small rectangular peices

  • Whisk together the flour, almond milk, and salt in a medium bowl

  • Dip the mozzarella pieces into the flour batter, then shake off the excess.

  • Next, add to the breadcrumbs.

  • Repeat until all the mozzarella is coated.

  • Gently add a few of mozzarella sticks to the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan, and fry for a few minutes, then use tongs to carefully remove them to a paper towel lined plate

  • Repeat until all the mozzarella sticks are fried

  • Serve warm with marinara

Notes

  • These are just as tasty as “regular” mozzarella sticks, the flavor is perfect, the only difference is the vegan mozzarella cheese doesn’t “stretch” the same way
  • The cheese is easy to work with, because it doesn’t melt and stretch the same way it doesnt need to be chilled before deep frying
  • I used a cashew based vegan mozzarella style cheese
